salford v wakefield match review

Salfords winning run came to a end against Wakefield Trinity at the AJ Bell Stadium. Paul Whiteside takes you through the action.

Two of the in form teams in the country met at the AJ Bell stadium with Wakefield lying 4th and Salford second! Both sides picked up two wins over the bank holiday so something had to give today.

Salford looked odds on to open the scoring but a loose pass found Mason Caton Brown who raced  the full length to score a real sucker punch try. Liam Finn added the goal 0-6.

On the next set of six Salford forced the mistake. Wakefield defended man fully to keep the Red Devil's at bay for three sets of six.

23 mins  in Salford were on the attack again close to the Trinity line yet again a loose pass costs Salford dearly. Reece lynne races away showing great pace! Ben Murdoch Masila chases back but just can't get there in time. Finn hits the post off the touch line. 0-10.

Mistakes are punishing Salford and when Kris Welham loses the ball deep in his own half Wakefield move the ball brilliantly and lynne got his second. Finn adds the goal 0-16.

Salford got on the score sheet right on the hooter after a strong Craig Kopczack run, Kris Brining was quick at dummy half and Jake Bibby scored well in the corner. Michael Dobson kicks the goal 6-16 half time.

The second half starts with a renewed energy from Salford with Wakefield responding with real resilient defending. With half an hour remaining Todd Carney is introduced. Kopzack hits a flat pass like a freight train  to charge over under the posts. Dobson adds the goal 12-16.

The game seems to be changing momentum wise as Salford start to dominate. Masila sends fifita crashing to the ground as he bumps him off to race through. Todd Carney with an excellent 40/20 puts Salford on the front foot. Jake Bibby comes up with an acrobatic finish to score in the corner. Dobsons goal off the touch line gives the Red Devil's the lead for the first time in the match.

Wakefield refuse to lie down as the games twists yet again. Caton Brown scoring from a set scrum with Finn kicking off the touch line 18-22.

With just 8 minutes remaining Wakefield cough up a pressure kick 20 yards out. Kris Brining finds Lama Tasi with a lovely short ball to send him under the posts. Dobson adds the goal 24-22.
Trinity are not for giving up and attack with speed and purpose. Caton Brown completes his hat trick with four minutes remaining. The former Red Devil coming back to haunt his old club. Finns goal is good 24-28.

The game is put beyond doubt in the last minute when talented youngster James Batchelor strolls through a tired Salford defence Finn kicks the final goal 24-34.

A disappointed Ian Watson was pleased with the effort of his team and vowed to fix things up for the hull game on Friday. After a real entertaining match Salford just came up short final score Salford 24 Wakefield Trinity 34.
