MATCH REPORT Salford 44 Hull KR 26

Paul Whiteside looks back at a good home win for Salford against Hull KR and another Junior Sau hatrick.

After losing 6 points on Monday Salford were looking to bounce back today at home to Hull KR! The Red Devils made a real solid start to the game looking tough in defence and dangerous with the ball. Great hands and a lovely off load from Mark Flanagan sent  Junior Sau scores in the corner for the first points of the game. Michael Dobson misses the kick 4-0 with ten minutes gone.

From the kick off on the next set of six Salford carve The Robins up with a lovely ball back on the inside and Gareth O Brien sends Robert Lui under the posts. Dobson kicks the goal and Salford are well on top at 10-0. Niall Evalds is tested under a high kick but he takes it brilliantly and Salford were on the attack again. It's real wonderful play from Gaz O Briens with sublime footwork creates the chance for Evalds who finishes tremendously well in the corner. O Brien kicks off the touch line Salford lead 16-0 after just 17 minutes.

Hull KR hit back but are rather fortunate. Albert Kelly's teasing grubber kick towards the posts cruelly evades the Salford defence and Maurice Blair pounces to score. Ken Sio adds the goal 16-6. The robins up the anti and attack again Josh griffin does really well to defuse a dangerous kick which resulted in a drop out. Salford defend their line well and the danger passed.

Michael Dobson made a break stepping past three defenders but is caught just shy of the line, great foot work from the number 7 who is looking really sharp for Salford in the last few games.

Approaching half time George Griffin went over from close range showing great strength Dobson adds the goal 22-6. Hull KR are on the ropes and kick the ball out on the full. Salford attack from the penalty and seize there chance as once again Gaz O Brien the architect sends the powerful Josh Jones over. The hooter sounds just as O Brien kicks the goal. One real quality first half that Salford dominated! Half time 28-6.

Hull KR with nothing on at the start of the second half put a speculative kick out wide Sau fails to take it and Ian Thornley scores for The Robins Sio kicks the goal 28-12. Salford storm back with Justin Carney who bursts clear only to be caught by a great cover tackle. Salford forced the mistake and ten yards out from the scrum O Brien and Lui link brilliantly to send Sau over in the 59th minute. Dobson misses the goal 32-12. Next it's a real sucker punch as Ken Sio catches a stray O Brien kick and races 60yards to the line he also kicks the goal 32-18.

Logan Tomkins is sin binned for Salford and the extra man counts for The Robins who scored out wide from the resulting penalty as young Thomas Mimms went over. Sio fails to convert 32-22. Salford are made of stern stuff this season and won't roll over! A fantastic grubber kick from Lui and Junior Sau scores his hat trick try for the second week running. O Brien kicks superbly off the touch line and with 8 minutes remaining it's 38-22.

Rovers though keep plugging away and pounce on the loose ball as Mimms goes in for his second try. Blair misses the goal. 38-26. It's Salford who have the final say Gaz O Brien and Lui combining brilliantly once again with Robert lui going under the posts  OBrien kick the goal and at full time Salford get the win they richly deserve!!

A real spirited performance today. Off the bottom of the table and chasing the top eight again. Massive cup tie away at CASTLFORD next Saturday. All is not lost this season despite the points deduction Salford have it all to play for and with the togetherness we have at are club who knows.
