Salford Red Devil squad preview - halfbacks

Salford take on Wigan on Saturday in their 1st super league game of 2017. Dan Robinson talkes a look at who may take their place in the half back positions this season.

Michael Dobson

Salford skipper Michael Dobson is looking for a big season in 2017. Dobson has made over 54 appearances scoring over 150 points since joining The Reds from NRL side Newcastle knights. Scrum half Dobson has been an influential leader joining the reds on a 3year deal. Dobson's kicking game will no doubt play a vital part if the Reds are to have a good campaign and his partnership with either Lui or Carney will be good to see.

Rob Lui

Stand off Rob lui will hope to start the 2017 season as he did in 2016 with his best performance in the red shirt coming against St Helens at the AJ Bell at the start of the 2016 super league season. Lui in his day can be the best player on the field but did have injuries which halted  him towards the end. If he can lead the line well and get the big forward around him running good lines then I'm sure we will see the best out of him in 2017.

Josh Wood

Young prospect Josh Wood will be one to watch in 2017. The diversity he offers at half back and hooker will be a massive if injuries start to play their part. Wood has certainly put his name in the hat for a regular place in the starting 17 with some excellent performances during pre-season. Wood has come through the ranks at the club as many of the first team this season have and will no doubt want to be in the frame for all games in 2017.

Salfords latest star recruit has certainly raised a few eye brows after signing a deal with the club. Carney has been a very key cog in the French side Catalans Dragons machine over the past couple of seasons and I really do see his playing a huge part of the Red Devil's are to be a success this season. The half back is still waiting on a verdict regarding his visa but the club seem confident this will be given the green light some time this week allowing him to join up with the rest of the team. With almost 200 first grade career games under his belt Carneys experience and leadership will no doubt contribute to the halfs this year and maybe offer young Josh Wood some vital pointers to improve his game.
